A proposed descriptor for how context changes what becomes locally relevant or attention-attracting among represented meanings.

Semantic mass is not relevance. Context bends relevance.

Why this term exists

A concept can be globally prominent and still be the wrong local answer. Semantic Gravitation starts from that gap, then asks what a pull-only account still misses.

Definition in the system

This project sits on the semantic side of the ecosystem: represented meanings, documents, concepts, retrieval candidates and contextual relevance. It is deliberately narrower than Semonika.

The bridge question is “Semantic Gravitation only pulls. What is missing?” Attraction can describe convergence, but relation also includes complementarity, controlled stretching, timing and readiness. That gap opens the path toward Semonic Fields and Semonika.

The term must also be kept distinct from established uses of “semantic gravity” in other academic frameworks. The project uses the difference as a research boundary, not as a claim to replace those theories.

Example

In retrieval, a globally famous candidate may outrank a less prominent candidate until the query context makes the latter more locally relevant. The ranking shift is an operational phenomenon that can be measured before any larger theory is accepted.

What it is not

Semantic Gravitation is not an established physical force, and it does not claim that similarity or attraction explains every meaningful relation.

Formal / operational note

Research programme: compare context-conditioned rank/score/graph/embedding changes against baseline retrieval and reranking mechanisms; retain the extra descriptor only where it adds explanatory or predictive value.
